Christ-centered Christianity (Col 2:6-3:17)

  • The theological basis for Christ’s centrality
    • The main idea- Jesus Christ himself is the source and substance of everything in our Christian walk; we receive everything we need for our spiritual life directly and exclusively through our union with him. (Col 2:6-10).
    • Union with Christ in our salvation/sanctification- Literally everything necessary to salvation and sanctification flows through our union with Christ (col 2:11-16)
    • The implications- Nothing of earth, regardless of its apparent usefulness, has any part to play in our spiritual walk, for it is not of Christ (col 2:17-23)
  • The centrality of Christ lived out
    • the main idea- The believer’s spiritual union to Jesus Christ necessitates a pervasive heavenly mindedness that dominates every facet of our earthly existence: our ambition, disposition, and identity.
    • putting to death earthy ambitions and dispositions (3:5-8)our identity on Christ- (3:9-11)
    • putting on heavenly dispositions and ambitions (11-18)
