The elite soldiers of Jesus Christ are not the strongest, most gifted, and most righteous; they are the broken souls who dare to tenaciously follow their Captain through the darkest aspects of human experience; and their exploits follow them.
- Jesus is the perfect Captain of Salvation to his people, the leader who, by force of his own nature and person, inspires fanatic devotion in his people (Hebrews 2:9-18)
- Our Captain must be incarnate to achieve the heroic victories necessary to his office (2:9-10)
- Our Captain must suffer if he is to lead a suffering people (2:11-13)Our Captain must share our bondage in order to break our chains (2:14-15)
- Our Captain must share the entire scope of our human experience to be able to help complex and varied people (2:16-18)
- The followers of the Captain are marked by their commitment to fervently follow him down all the dark paths the Father has ordained. They adhere to three standing orders (Hebrews 4:14-16; 12:1-3)
- Aggressively hold to your confession, because we follow Jesus (4:14)
- Constantly draw near to God, because Jesus knows how to help us (4:15-16)
- Enduringly run in your appointed service, because Jesus ran before us to show the way (12:1-3)
