Christological psalms are a beautiful thing; for they pull back the curtains and let us gaze upon one of the greatest mysteries in the world universe: the real humanity of the God-man. They describe the author’s experience, apply generally to the human experience, and also refer prophetically to Christ himself; and it is in the overlap between all these that the true beauty lies. We see here the humanity of Christ overlapping with our own, and learn from him how to rightly deal with the various complexities of human existence. In Psalm 16:5-11, we see the joy of the God-Man that filled his soul even in his passion: from this we learn that the reality of our union and communion with God assuages the deepest longings of the human soul, creating an emotional core of confident joy that sustains us even amidst the darkest aspects of human experience.
- Jehovah gives himself to his people as their personal possession, and secures their inheritance himself; therefore, his people are fully satisfied in him, regardless of the difficulties life brings.
- Jehovah constantly guides the thought process and innermost affections of his people; therefore, his people are stabilized by his presence, regardless of the storms life brings.
- Jehovah rescues his people from all the enemies of their soul, yes, even from the very grip of death itself; therefore, his people are secure in him, regardless of the dangers life brings.
When believers, like their Christ, actualize their union with Jehovah and practice real communion with him, they cry out in confident joy, “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”
