Rend the Heaven’s and Come Down (Isaiah 63:15-64)

When God’s people evaluate themselves in light of the reality of God himself, they are forced to confront, at the same time, the cavernous depth of their human failures, and the lofty heights of their divine inheritance.

  • When faced with this terrifying dichotomy, the only possible response is repentant, desperate, and expectant prayer. We have degenerated so far from what we were made to be that we are barely recognizable as a people of God; but God still recognizes us, and our bonds to him are unbreakable (63:15-19)
  • We are so encumbered by the massive weight of our everyday sins that we are unable to lift ourselves up; but God intervenes in the lives of his people with unfathomable omnipotence. (64:1-7)
  • We are utterly and completely ruined; but God still responds with fatherly love to our child-like pleas for help. (64:8-12)
